Saltwater Charter Fishing
with
SILVER SUN CHARTERS

The waters around Prince Rupert B.C. teem with fish all summer long!

A typical saltwater fishing charter trip begins shortly after daybreak at the picturesque Rushbrook Floats, minutes from downtown Prince Rupert. Your group will board the 'Slay Belle', a  21 foot fully equiped Trophy fishing machine powered by a 150 horsepower Mercury blue water outboard. The early morning run to the fishing grounds will take about forty-five minutes to an hour.  Chatham Sound is surrounded by a ring of islands from the south and west. They offer good protection from the ocean and it is around these islands that we fish. The journey is a scenic adventure in itself, as we wind our way between the cedar covered islands on our way to the hot spots. If you want crabs on your charter we will take a few minutes to set traps on the way out, so we can collect the tasty crustations on our return in the afternoon.

The Slay Belle is fully equiped with state of the art GPS and sonar to locate the good fishing spots quickly. Marine VHF radio will keep us in touch with other boats and the shore. The next few hours will be used to target our main species, either halibut or salmon, depending on the season and your preference. You will enjoy fishing with new, top quality gear. The afternoon is often spent challenging secondary targets, such as tasty rockfish or cod. Whales, seals and sea lions, as well as a wide variety of sea birds are frequently seen through out the day. On a clear day one can see the mountains of Alaska from the fishing grounds. In the late afternoon we will return to the docks where your catch will be cleaned and filleted for you.

JUNE
In Prince Rupert, June is the month of huge chinook salmon, also known as King Salmon or Tyee. The summer's longer days bring these leviathons back to the rivers of their birth. Before they enter the freshwater they feed heavily on herring, packing on maximum poundage to sustain themselves through the rigors of the upcoming spawn.  Herring, fat with their own roe, is the prey of choice, and the big Chinhook mill around gorging themselves on the abundant resource. These monsters often go over 40 pounds, and some over  70 are caught each year, really big fish, over 100 pounds lurk the depths. Each person is allowed to retain two adult chinhook per day.  If you want a chance to hook a giant  trophy  tyee, June and EARLY July is the time to book your charters! Book early, as prime time dates are limited and are filled quickly.

Halibut and rockfish abound in the early summer, and crabbing is great. Many halibut are available in the 15 to 50 lb. range, and huge ones often top 200lbs! Monsters, over 500lbs have been landed in the waters off Prince Rupert. Each person's daily quota of halibut is two, and each person may possess three halibut, after fishing for two or more days. June is an excellent time to book a charter for groundfish. One may retain up to eight pacific cod per day. Let me know if you would like to set crab traps on your charter, crabs are very plentiful, and provide excellent tablefare.

In June one can view as many as fifty bald eagles right from the docks at Rushbrook Floats.

JULY
July is the month that five species of salmon are available. Join us for the continuing trophy chinook fishing, exciting coho action, or book a trip specializing in great tasting groundfish. Pink and chum salmon will show later in the month. With this many fish in the water it is an excellent time to book your charter.  Over twenty species of pacific rockfish lurk the depths, so you are sure to take home some of the finest tasting fish in the sea (I guarantee it!). Rockfish limits are liberal in the northern regions, with a daily limit of five rockfish per person, and a possesion quota of ten per person.

This area is so remote you may fish for hours without another boat in sight. Beautiful uninhabited  islands dot the sea, their giant old growth Cedars reaching almost 200 ft into the sky. Halibut are available all summer, and July is a great time to hook into sea bass, red snapper, ling cod, and pacific rockfish. By mid July the waters are teaming with coho, pink, sockeye, chinook and chum salmon returning to the area to feast on baitfish before their return to freshwater.  Each person has a daily quota of four salmon per day, two of which may be adult chinook. Each person may possess eight salmon, after fishing two or more days, four of which may be adult chinook. Whales are common, feeding on the abundant resurces. Book in late July for a chance at some of the hottest Coho action around. Book early to obtain the best dates, these prime-time trips are in high demand.

AUGUST
This is the time to book for a coho salmon expedition. Coho are world class fighters and can be taken with a variety of methods, fast trolling bait, spoons, or  bucktail flies, but my all time favorite is mooching. This is the ultimate thrill, as one can use light to medium tackle to fully enjoy the acrobatics of these wonderful salmon. Coho of 10 to 18 lbs will pace a fast trolled fly, then turn and grab it, heading off in a line stripping run, often leaping and cartwheeling many times during the battle. Single action reels and long limber rods are used to enjoy the battle to the utmost. Often we hook into as many as 20 salmon a day. Can it get any better than this? Yes! Late August will bring the first of the hook nosed, hard fighting northern coho, sometimes exceeding the 20 pound mark!  August is the busiest month at Silver Sun Charters, book early to avoid disappointment. It is the best month to view whales that have come to the area to reap the bountiful harvest of herring, krill and salmon.

SEPTEMBER
That's right, the coho get even bigger! These are the hard fighting, hook nosed giants of their species.  These brutes are here while they chase down herring smolts to fatten up before entering the mighty river systems for their spawning run.  Halibut, crab and groundfish are still available to provide a break from the salmon action. Most of the groundfish possess nice white flesh, highly prized as gourmet meals, or even sushi. Some of the other wildlife you may encounter while fishing are:  Eagles, seals, whales, sea lions, porpoise and a variety of sea birds. Often bears can be seen foraging along the unihabited shorelines. I will do everthing I can to ensure you have a fun and memorable trip.

Its good to fish with friends.
